and seconding the Also, I don't know all that much about art, but I thought the pictures in this book were really good. Nice work, Cameron- not too hot on the analysis of visual images meself, but it told the story and looked damn cool while it was doing it.

I wasn't really expecting any full-on 7S stuff from the get-go... I'm quite partial to a nice origin story, which this was.

And the block texted "Suddenly the sputtering barks of a dying engine..." bit made me want to jump up and down clapping, but I was on the bus, so I settled for a cheesy grin.

On the basis of this, SK and the SS#0, I'm really loving the different styles and moods for the different stories. The downside of this is that I'm obviously going to like some more than others- the upside, hopefully, is that it looks like I'm going to enjoy them all.

No, this was the best of them, so far. It's got a real classic Marvel vibe in the storytelling; There's a few moments where it's like GM's channeling Silver Age Stan Lee, and the art matches perfectly - great work, Cam.

I'm sorry to say that I'm counted among those who were disappointed by this issue. To me, it seemed that not much happened, and that what did happen was mostly generic and obvious. The whole issue struck me as a sub-par Astro City issue, not at all what I would hope for from GM. Becasue I've enjoyed most of his work so far (tho not the JLA flavor of stuff, maybe that's why this felt off to me) I still have high hopes for this and the rest of the project, but so far I'm underwhelmed.

1. As a tabloid writer, I really enjoyed the headlines in the Manhattan Guardian. As well, of course, as the whole dream-version of the business. We've never done a story about subway pirates as far as I know, but I think that may change....

2. What was the Hebrew lettering on the golem's head? I just glanced at it and thought it was yod-he-vau-he (the name of God), but could have been mistaken.

Grant, you're correct, that's what the lettering is. Unfortunately I screwed it up and had it reading left-to-right (Hebrew reads right-to-left) and even though I changed the art and resubmitted it, there was a technical error and one of the pages wasn't printed with the revised artwork.

i thought this was the funnest 7s bit yet. lovely pictures. but, stan? jack? the only 'so holy to be known by one name' comics guy being channelled here is pat - freak armies, serious kids, mucho massacred bystanders and a guy who survives being skinned, roasted and dragged behind a train. i really hope soapy doesn't die yet, and has a lot more nastiness in store in the next three ishs.

On the Mills thing, I was kinda dribbling around that earlier when I mentioned the worm-god ref that was tossed out; I think yawn was banging on about the old Horned God and its' Celt mythology foundations in the SK thread. (Being a - ha! - youth my only comic book antecedents are the Vertigo-verse stuff; pulled out DP #53 and that BoM annual where Millar detourns it into some horrible Titans satire - with art by Phil 'I welcome all comparisons to George Perez, so much so I'm about to draw Infinite Crisis' Jiminez. The comments section at the fairly-tasty-although-I-refuse-to-believe-the-author-is-21-as-he-occasionally-claims Brill Building has some discussion on the comparative merits of Grant's Kirbying about.)

My Mills-sense ain't so hot; only read the aforementioned and some Marshal Law; is this a Crisis/New Statesman thing you're driving at Gumbitch? Or what?

A lot of the need to discuss this seems to centre round the question 'Is Geoffrey Monmouth a bullshitter?' This is simply ended: I know he's a bullshitter thanks to some sage advice from my dad when I was younger - he said "Everyone from the West Coast (meaning nr. Glasgow) thinks that they are in a film."

i was thinking of the dredd Cursed Earth saga, the ABC warriors, nemesis, that kinda thing: hie thee to a back issue bin, or, if you've really not read the ABC warriors, PM me because it's time for a swopsy. mainly though, i'm thinking of a strip from i think Eagle or Scream called the thirteenth floor about an AI who ran a block of flats that hid a scary thirteenth floor, where the 'puter would murder anyone who upset the residents - y'know burglars, bible salesman, and other baddies.*

Books o' Magic. I think the fairies were called Seelie (bad anes Unseelie?) in it; there was some Wild Hunt action in the late #60's, where I decided to start picking the book up.

I've read a bit of ABC actually. The Bisley one with the would-be robo-woman, fancied Joe Pineapples, and the Kev O'Neill painted one(?) Did Mills do all the ABC Warrior stuff?

Regarding la Brunt, I just splashed 3 note for Firekind today (no new comics, bank holiday delays. Really looking forward to 50p's worth of bad setup.)

Thirteenth Floor was DEFINITELY an influence. Also Kavalier & Clay as has been pointed out.

Liked this a lot - maybe not quite as much as Shining Knight but it's a whole other thing. Really felt Morrison's stated desire to work in computer games as an influence coming through in the way this disembodied voice keeps shouting warnings and orders at Jake.

I was dissappointed by the writing in this issue. If I read it without knowing it was GM then I have dumped the thing out of the window because IMHO it just read like a very poor comic from about 1988. The art was ok, but there were no characters or ideas or even well executed sequencies at all. If it hadn't have had GM's name or it I would not have guessed that he had written it in a million years. Read to me like a very poor UK Marvel title written by Simon Furman. (yep, that bad.)

I love GM and hope the rest of this title and the series that follow are better.

I don't think the 'Genghis Morrison' comment was really called for. I'm a big fan of Mr Morrison (otherwise I won't be here) but I was dissappointed by this issue which I felt was well below the usual high standard of Mr M's work.

I thought that the characters were weak and the back story about shooting the 13 year old kid accidentally was the kind of thing you might find in a TV movie. The idea of the brain / computer in the building is hardly original. I don't think I seen pirates on subway trains before (!) but I'm afraid that I wasn't entirely convinced by either the pirates or the entire newsboy army set up. It just all seemed very silly and dry. (IMHO.)

In general I found the whole story weak and unconvincing, and I'm afraid it did give me a flashback to those UK Marvel titles (non-Transformer) written by Simon Furman around 1987-92. I do realise that's a terrible terrible terrible thing to say. I was very surprised and dissappointed by how poor I found it to be. I've since re-read it but it didn't make me change my view.

Just bought this today; thankful to find a copy.

I dunno if it's better *or* worse than Shining Knight, but I do know it was rollickin' fun, like a Kirby comic that fell into a time loop in the 70's and plopped into my lap here in the present.

And once again Cameron shows off another art style. It's some nice stuff, I see quick a few influences in it, but the art in Seaguy may have been... smoother, you know?

A pretty good comic, all around, yes. I could easily see this as an ongoing.

I would LOVE for this to be an ongoing series. My favorite S7 book so far. I'm hoping DCU creators don't choose to ignore this version of the Guardian at the very least.
