I'm not sure this is the right place to bring this up, but I have an idle query.

Are there enough active mods on the board currently? I've been looking at the lists of mod names on each forum, and almost half of them appear to be people who don't really post anymore. Are they still around? If not, should they be replaced?

Not that the current mods don't do a fantastic job - you all do, you know - but I was curious whether you mightn't be a tad overloaded, if a lot of people have gone AWOL.

Okay, on second glance, maybe not almost half. But some of them I've never even heard of. Are they working behind the scenes and not posting? Have they vanished without a trace? Do we need to rally a search party?

I'd suggest not given that the turnaround for mod requests is running into several hours at the moment.

Are there specific areas of the board where it's a more noticable problem than others? I've not encountered any real problems in either P&H or FTV&T, and Music's a slow enough forum that it doesn't matter.

It’s not just about speedily deleting double posts though, is it? It’d be nice if currently active posters - yeah, like sekhmet, for example - had a little more of the responsibility, and those that don’t feel much like barbling any more, let go. Some of the guys who responded to the ‘mods assemble’ thread have hardly said a word since.

Okay, so it looks like most of those folks are still alive and kicking, if not posting... but several mentioned that they may not want to continue being mods. Maybe a reshuffle is in order?

I'm not bucking for the job myself, of course (thanks all the same, Bed, that's very sweet).

Ugh. Morpheus' most recent couples of posts in the Head Shop (BDSM thread and Speaking Ill Of The Dead) are barely comprehensible as a collection of sentences, and the former is deeply offensive and ignorant to boot. What to do, eh?

Actually, I'm wondering about that. Certainly his approach to the BDSM thread is so unhelpful - not reading anything anyone else writes, clearly embroidering the truth rather as to his experiences, making sweeping and offensive generalisations - that I think it might be worth simply deleting his contributions unless they demonstrate any interest in playing with others. He's already convinced that his is the last free voice in a criminal world, so it wouldn't have any greater impact on his parlous mental state, and it would improve the net quality of the thread.

On the subject of Morpheus...I agree that he is posting incoherent and, in one instance, offensive drivel. But I'd still feel happier if there was a warning issued in the BDSM thread before posts were deleted.

On the one hand, I'm pleased that Deva is trying to engage with Morpheus or at least is engaging with the topic in such a way as to raise the tone of the thread.

On the other hand, if someone turned up and started gurgling "It ain't natural, I tell you!" about, say, homosexuality, and made no attempt to engage in discussion beyond repeatedly stating how sick and not sexy it was, how long would we allow this to continue in the Head Shop? Why should this be any different?

Could we not add something to the Wiki that says something like: "If you want us to get to know you, join in a discussion. You don't need to tell us you're 24 and like science fiction novels."

Perhaps it makes it easier when you join the board for the first time if you actually let people know that you're there? It might actually stop people from writing gung-ho nonsense if their first experience of posting is simply to tell us a few facts. They'll get their first post out of the way and will actually think properly about their second.

As regards introductions, this is what's currently in the wiki:

"Netiquette on introduction threads varies across the 'net, and attitudes to it vary a lot (bunch of liberal committee-types that we are, there's a discussion of this here). There seems to be a slight leaning against them, and in favour of just sliding into the place slowly, reading, lurking, picking up the atmosphere and then leaping headlong into a huge argument. The softly-softly approach is probably the least likely to attract attack . That said, some people like 'em."

Which doesn't explicitly forbid intro threads or demand that someone find the existing ones and post into them. If it's OK with everyone, I'll add a link to the most recent large-scale introductions thread to the wiki.

We currently have in the 'welcome to barbelith' e-mail a suggestion that people go and post to an introductions thread in the Conversation as a way of getting them to start being involved in some fashion. I can remove it if people would prefer.

I would suggest removing it, or changing it to:

if you want to introduce yourself, there is a thread called "Introductions" in the Conversation you can use, but feel free to jump right in to a thread that takes your interest.

On Morpheus - I've also posted something that tries to make some useful points out of his contribution and move the discussion on to a new field. I know in the past that responding in that fashion to the trollish has been seen as giving them too much weight. I just wanted to post here to note that I'm not doing this with any expectation of him responding coherently, or because I don't approve of him being publically slapped; I will doubtless move on to slapping myself, but he was providing a handy jumping-off point.

I think that in the 'welcome to Barbelith' email there should be a link to the introductions thread because people are still starting new threads and this might be because they haven't really worked out how to find threads that aren't on the first page.

Also, is it possible for a moderator to amalgamate all the (relevant) random threads into the proper introductions thread, or would you have to do that Tom?
