Is there any chance at all that we can amend this thread's abstract to include the words "no lists"? I appreciate that much of the content will then be at odds with the abstract, but if we are to raise the quality of posts to said thread something more needs to be done. I'm getting really fed up with having to argue with posters who are too lazy or too thick to actually write a post giving their reasons.

Alternatively I could start a replacement thread.

I will never understand why some people have such problems with these lists (and I have read their reasoning, I think it´s blown out of proportion).

If you don´t agree with posts that are just lists without explaining why the listed items are chosen, simply skip such posts. That´s what I do with posts that don´t agree with my taste.

And starting your own thread, where those lists are posts-non-grata is a good and constructive idea.

Short answer, Mist - because lists are the the equivalent of quoting Monty Python sketches - the effort to read them is disproportionate to the effort of writing them. As such, there is a feeling that they clutter up the place and give an impression of intellectual laziness that is likely to encourage bad practice elsewhere - to use the formulation above, to encourage people to be lazy or thick elsewhere on Barbelith.

Mist, it's about creating a culture where thought and engagement with the board is encouraged, and laziness isn't (and let's face it, list posts are lazy). In order to do so we have to start with the basics, such as frowning on posts that fly is the face of those goals, or encouraging idle posters to work a bit harder. Of course it all depends on what kind of board you want Barbelith to be, but if you feel anything like I do, then I think you'll agree that I'm not proposing anything too dramatic.

Well, we've got a philosophical question here, then, about whether lists should be tolerated by default - personally, I'm inclined to say "no". Certainly in a no lists thread they should be moved for deletion. But should we have list threads in the Spectacle at all? They're not really a discussion but more something like an online game, akin to "What's your favourite colour?" or "what can you see out of the window?"...

Of course another reason for posting lists is egotism. Look what I like, isn't it cool? Aren't I radical? etc...

Personally I'd be wary of deleting all list posts, but I am all for deleting lists when they show up in "no lists" threads. Hopefully those that post lists will start to see the error of their ways when list threads are paired down to their fundamental dullness, and all other content is removed.

As I said, I understand your way of thinking, but it´s not something I mind.

Maybe we could solve this problem once and for all (yay for optimism!) by making it the rule, that there is one thread per forum for lists, and all other threads have to be list-free.

New posts with lists could then either be deleted or shoved into the list-thread.

I think there's possibly a room for list-threads at the end of the year, as there have been fairly successful threads of favourite books/movies/comics/links-to-boyfriends'-cocks in the past, albeit the better ones are supported with a little critical analysis as well. Maybe if we got Jimmy Carr to present them that would be better?

Good idea! Those end of the year lists fill up half the dec/jan Rolling Stone for example, so this would be a good way to meet the demand and get it out of the system.

Absolutely nothing wrong with lists. As long as there is argument to explain the preferment of each listed item. Lists without argument should be instantly excised. And the poster spanked.

When I say "lists", I mean lists without the explanation.

The Barbequotes thread still apparently contains quotes from "divers barbeloids". (Blah blah stupid joke about divers blah blah) Can we change it to diverse?

I'd rather it wasn't changed; 's just an archaic spelling. I like.

Put in a req. for seth's pics to be resized in Melt Banane thread, with proviso that if it works not, or not well, do not do.

The question is To what traditions are you heir?, goddammit.

To which traditions, shurely?

I say leave it - avoiding prepositions at the ends of sentences is good style but has no impact on comprehensibility or searching.

Ending sentences with prepositions is becoming so common these days that sometimes it feels archaic to rephrase them in that form.

Then again, some writers just won't learn.

Do we really need individual threads for each issue of Milligan's X-Men? Would anyone mind if I alter the title and summary of the latest thread for ongoing discussion? If we're doing one thread for each Grant Morrison title it seems only right to do it for the other series we cover too.

Should the 'Grant Morrison Interviews' thread be locked? It's not like it's anywhere near the original topic any more...

I dunno, I kinda think it might be a rather good idea for the Comics forum to have the one catch-all thread for containing all the little spurts of discussion that each *new* Grant Morrison interview generates. I thought that was what that one was. Or could have been, if you’d locked it rather than moved it. The thread for linking to, then talking about, “New Grant Morrison interviews”.

Being moved to the Convo doesn't stop it being linked to, though... and not being locked means people can still post to it, rather than think of that great bit of GM-lovin' or hatin' and have to put it somewhere else and rot yet another thread...

To be honest, I didn't really see a problem with it being unlocked and left where it was, but given the choice, I'd go for moving over locking any day.

Bed Head
23:41 / 08.12.05
Well, sorry, maybe I’ve misunderstood the point of proposing a move, then. I thought that moving this thread rather than locking it was an acknowledgement that the thread was lost, and that in Convo the current rot can continue if it wants to and can then burn itself out. That the Morissey jokes and the monkeys, all the stuff like that, can now be posted next time someone bumps it, and it won’t really be rot any more, because now it’s in Convo, and that’s what happens to Threads That Go Wrong when they’re in Convo.

Leaving aside the unfortunate outbreak of Crazy Poster that has kinda taken over that particular thread, I was only trying to suggest that there could have been a use for that thread in Comics, or just a thread with a *title* like that. If you had locked it, you could have just unlocked it again when someone asked you to/next time there’s a new Grant Morrison interview, couldn’t you?

Boboss
00:40 / 09.12.05
Yes, but by leaving it in Comics a rather bad example is set, no? I mean, it's hardly gonna cause a problem if another (on topic) Mozzer interview thread is started three months from now.

Bed Head
01:19 / 09.12.05
So, just so I’m straight, are you saying lets have a new thread every time there’s a new interview, or lets have a whole new ‘Morrison interviews’ thread for all interviews?

It’s just that I think *other* Morrison interview threads have descended into swingballery and TehMadness before now. Morrison interview threads can be 3 or 4 pages of such stuff. If Convo can find room for 40-page Ugh! Fuck! threads and 50-page Random Q&A threads, then why not have the one catch-all thread in Comics for *containing* Morrison interview chat? Just as a thought. And then, that last one might actually serve as a pretty useful example the next time there’s a Morrison interview. Moving it to Convo might be more like resetting the counter to zero.

I’m just suggestin’. So, that was your reason for proposing the move was it, Boboss? That it would be setting a bad example to leave it where it was? Right so.

Boboss
01:42 / 09.12.05
I think we *should* have a catch all thread, but I think *that* thread is so far off topic that whilst it could serve the aforementioned purpose, I'd rather it didn't because it sets a bad example.

Frankly, the thread should never have been allowed to get so far off topic. I think the Comics mods (myself included) should've stepped in much earlier.

Boboss
01:44 / 09.12.05
...And hopefully we will in future, so as to avoid any resetting to zero related problems.
