Python I like. However, we're wandering offtopic.

there are political landmines in any kind of humorous expression. Especially ones involving "traditional" culture from East Asia.

True, and as masked assassins silently slaughtering people isn't awfully liberal anyway i might avoid the whole Pirates/Ninjas debate in future, it's but another dualism to be transcended after all.

From now on i'll torment my cat until it pulls a grotesque face, photograph it and put some nonsensical words underneath - much more 'of the moment', i think.

Anyway sorry, yeah, back to the topic...

There's nothing wrong with debates on Pirates/Ninjas IMO (except that it's a meme that has limited ongoing humour potential as far as my funny-glands are concerned). The debate itself isn't really comparing actual pirates to actual ninjas (except, I guess, on the most hardcore of Facebook groups where I fear to tread) rather it is the pop culture versions of those two groups that are being compared.

(Rotty side-note: I have a feeling the original intent of the gag was to satire interwebhead tendencies to compare two things and argue endlessly about which is "harder".)

Either way, "funny" voices aren't always a good idea on the boards, and even less so when adding in stuff about sexual violence in order to be more "funny".

What's up with flyboy's thread in Convo, and why has it been locked? Did it actually bother someone, beyond being pointless?

I believe it was an act of mercy—just as a doctor might put a patient in restraints, to keep hir from injuring hirself.

Indeed. Down to the vault for Davros, that's what I say!

The lock was proposed by Flyboy. Moderation actions proposed by thread starters are generally accepted unless there is a convincing reason not to. Voting on it, I didn't think there was a lot of point in vetoing the request - if people really wanted to share their feelings, they could do so by starting a new thread. And lo.

That makes me feel a little better, to be honest.

Doesn't really seem like we need two Jonathan Carroll threads, right? Can we merge them or something?

No. We can lock one, if anyone can be bothered.

I've put the request in to lock the new one, seeing as it's entirely content free. Other than me and Haus, are any of the other Book mods still on Barbelith any more?

I'll ask again, can a mod in Switchboard please try changing at least the summary of the Lakota thread? It remains inaccurately inclusive, when really, only a small portion of Lakota people, enrolled or otherwise, are actually involved.

Thanks.

Title and abstract have been moved for a change - I've voted yes.

Any chance of getting a title change on this thread? For those of us who don't enjoy the beautiful music of nails on a chalkboard?

How about 'Approaches to Preventing Violent Attacks' instead? There are lots of kinds of violence, and people other than women are affected.

I proposed a change. It may not have gone through yet, or may have been vetoed.

Not only deleted, but deleted before I even turn up to agree the request.

So things still function around here.

Gratifying.

Do we care about this sort of thing any more? My own inclination is to move to delete pretty much that entire page as off-topic, possibly copy and pasting the arguments to some other topic like maybe here, here or here if people want to continue waving their external sexual organs at one another.

That would be pretty pointless moderation, performed quite some time after the last post on the topic and in a list thread with no quality to preserve anyway, but at this stage if it gives you a feeling of being in control, go for it.

First time I've looked at it in months and some people seem to be keen on keeping the argument going.

Last post over a day ago. It's probably a dead subject - not even Granny managed to keep it going, and he was already an outrider trying to blow on dead embers. As I say, if it gives you a sense of control, go for it. There's not a lot of point talking about good or bad moderation in the Comic Books forum any more.

This is perhaps quite a big task (?), and it's understandable if you just tell me where to go, but I'd like to ask a favour of the Conversation mods.

When I signed up I used a name which is very close to both my email address (and an ID I use a few other minor places) and my real name. I didn't originally intend to discuss trans issues, but once I did, I for obvious reasons changed my Barbelith name. If I google the old name there are about twenty pages with my old name in, from people quoting me and so forth. This is - well, there's obviously information on here which makes me extremely vulnerable, and if someone were to identify me it could potentially quite seriously mess up my life. So: would it be at all possible to find those pages on Google and change anywhere anyone's used my old name to Pingles instead?

I would be so, so grateful if this could be done. If one of you needs to know my old name, ask and I'll PM.

I'm a bit busy atm, if you can PM me a list of links to the individual posts I'll change them for you.

Thank you thank you! I'll be sending a PM shortly.

Oh! - I've just noticed though that they're not all in the conversation, and I've no idea why I got that into my head. I hope you don't mind my sending switchboard and gathering posts too, but I could do with someone who could clear up a few posts (ten) in the head shop - again, I'd be really, really grateful.

Sorry, I know this is probably quite a pain in the - but I hope it's kind of understandable why I'd be worried about it.
