Lock it already, por favor.

Okay, ban request sent to Tom, now waiting on his response and agreement from Haus. Grounds for ban request... well, I'd hope that they're obvious, but if not, it's a random reappearance after half a decade away, designed to do nothing other than start a fight. Combine that with the wonderfully bigoted bullshit that he posted when he was here originally, for extra points.

Hmmm, is it just that even moderation requests for the Conversation will take forever or did someone turn down my lock request?

I agreed it several hours ago... fuck knows who's around, to be honest.

That whole instaban thing? Yeah, let's give it a try. (IN DURING "KILL IT WITH FIRE").

While we're at it, can we kick out 'Bored of Your Cunt' as well?

This doesn't work.

I have no idea if Tom even checks the email address we use for ban requests.

So Torquemada is still on the books?

I've seen nothing to suggest otherwise.

I'll copy it to his other address, see if there's a twitch. He's launching Fire Eagle at present, so may well have stopped checking personal email - in which case, well. It kind of highlights the problems with this model, although it's fine as long as whoever we're trying to ban is considerate and polite and stands still and silent while we train the sights on him or her. Which reminds me that I keep getting sidetracked on the handover stuff on the Aggressive Idiocy thread...

not been posting just reading so 'stupidly' didn't realise that anyone would see the name. It's a White House lyric that got stuck in my head...bad choice. Apologies to whoever found it to be offensive or whatever.

Actually, the correct Whitehouse lyric is "bored with your cunt."

Mods: Shouldn't this thread about the health insurance industry be in the Switchboard?

I would think so.

Hmm. Medical ethics is Lab. Insurance probably less so, though.

Tis a tad borderline, I'd agree. There is something about the way it is angled though, that makes me think Switchboard more than Lab.

Blimey. FTV&T requests are slow today. Is there a case for more mods?

There's a case for it, but it won't happen. We've been asking for the mod lists to be updated for the last two years, at least.

Talking of which, Books posts now cannot be modded as there are not enough mods to agree any amendments...

I'm willing to mod for both those fora if someone wants to start a list of people interested, like we did for the Comics last time (which was, what, only a year ago? Although that was just including more mods not removing mods).

Seriously guys, don't get your hopes up. I'd wait until Haus returns to the board, then see if he can make Tom aware of the urgency of the situation. He'd have more luck than me, I think, but whatever, there's absolutely no point in going into this without knowing whether or not anything productive will come of it. You only run the very real risk of massive disappointment otherwise.

If we can get the existing mods made mods for everything, that'll be a stopgap...

Do we have enough Switchboard mods to approve a change? I want to change an odious pic of Palin to a link.

Yep, although it's easier if you nominated it and let the squad agree.

I did, I was just checking there *was* a squad...

Film TV and fantasy casting (I'm looking at Strontium Dog here) - conversation, or inoffensive kick off to a non-thread?

is it worth even bothering saying something to mashedcat about the word "slattern"?

are any of the people who can ban people still on the board?

A Haus of Minions
22:53 / 30.09.08
Well, nobody said anything much about freektemple calling Sarah Palin a trollop. We can ban mashedcat if necessary, but a bit of sweet reason might work better as a starting point.

I just sent a PM to mashedcat, hopefully it's a case of unthinking use of slurword and is something that can be sorted with explanation-fu.

I apologise if my use of the word "Trollop" offended anyone, but I was acting in character for "Pirate Posting Day", and thought it period appropriate. I should also take this time to say sorry for my "Rape & Pillage" comment in a different thread, as well. It was not meant to carry specific sexual intonations, and was used only as flavour for Piratespeak.
Both comments were failed attempts at humour while attempting to participate in the meme of the day and do not represent my thinking of female republican polititians, overt or repressed. While I do find Ms. Palin an absolutely detestable person, I did not intend my use of the word trollop to be seen as sexual slander.

On such a note I've been wondering for a while just how politically-sensible it is to do the whole pirate-thing, what with much of what the historical ones say being questionable and their modern counterparts being well, quite nasty pieces of work. Maybe left-leaning liberals should just stick to being Ninjas?

(Which is to say, there are political landmines in any kind of humorous expression. Especially ones involving "traditional" culture from East Asia.)

I think tagging "slattern" once in-thread was just about right. Weird word. Hard to believe it wasn't being used in some kind of character.

Not hard at all, really. People on the Internet talk funny. We've got a chap in Comics who keeps calling people sir, sir.

Talk like a pirate day is sort of handy for identifying who might also be likely to recite Monty Python sketches verbatim until you want to kill your head, but given how many admittedly ghastly variations on piratespeak there are, it shouldn't be impossible to avoid verbal violence against women. The concepts exist in contemporary English, after all. However, we've done this a fair few times.
