Making the Avengers titles back-up stories for most of a year is sort of an odd decision, don't ya think? Them being meant to be flagships and all? But I'm surprisingly cool with it. Bendis has always done well with the one-off one issue stories and it means Secret Invasion won't be as rushed as Civil War, which spent so many pages launching tie-in titles it lost credibility and coherence.
That said, the Nick Fury issue wasn't a thriller. I've not encountered the Countess before, so this was just another issue in which Bendis gets one of his favourite characters laid before the plot moves along. As deduction methods go, following a suspect while invisible and overhearing a highly incriminationg chat in an alley way isn't subtle. It doesn't tell us much about the Skrull infiltration or Nick Fury, other than he knows.
And this latest Skrull back-up was heavy on exposition. Which probably needed to be done at some stage, but didn't make it the most enthralling read as a single issue. I thought Spider-Woman had a green chin from SI #1 anyway, calling her old buddies with Skrull Jarvis there in the background. But she's an important Skrull, top Skrull, because she was ideally placed to infiltrate and destroy. Really? Forgotten 70s character is keystone to hero hierarchy? Why not use Werewolf at Night too, just to make absolutely sure?
All way, way better than the Hood and Doom storylines, though. |
