B-but, Wolverine is a skrull, it seems. Nick Fury seems to think so*

Hasn't Wolverine been a Skrull before though? Around the time Scott Lobdell was writing every X-Comic. It didn't play out interestingly back then and I'm not sure it'd have much story potential to have him be a Skrull again. I mean, who cares for one? Wolverine has been through so many boring reveals and twists (battling some Satanic guy, regenerating from a drop of blood, blah blah, clone daughter, son with bad hair) lately that being a Skrull wouldn't be much of a shocking reveal. So yeah, he probably won't be a Skrull.

Yeah, Wolverine was a Skrull shortly before that "Mutant Skrulls" storyline from back when Alan Davis was pencilling and writing an X-Book, right?

Maybe the Wolverine Skrull was secretly a Skrull. I mean, like, maybe he was actually another completely unrelated Skrull, mimicking the first Skrull, mimicking Wolverine.

You know, I think I just talked myself into thinking an En Sabah Nur (yawn) storyline would be more interesting than this -- which indicates something very sick and bad and wrong. Wrong, I say.

...spoilers in the forth paragraph...

Notice there's two different colors of circles--I think we have an "either-or" scenario here. Either Wolverine, Sentry, Hulkling, and Strange are Skrulls, or Spider-Man, Daredevil, Lockjaw, Namor, and whoever the girl from Young Avengers are Skrulls. The former group--the red circles--have more of the mysterious pasts that would favor Skrull insertion (just like Elektra). That said, having Wolverine be a Skrull...again!...seems a bit cheap.

I don't think we should assume Tigra is Skrull just 'cause she was sleeping with one. I think it'd be a lot creepier if she wasn't...once she finds out.

Considering the main crux of the Skrull attack involved a computer virus targeting all of Stark's tech...I find it delicious that "Hank" used a similiar technique in taking out Ultron back in Mighty Avengers.

But getting back to Fury's board...in light of the reveal at the end of New Avengers 40: does Fury know that Spider-Woman is a Skrull? His head covers her picture, so we don't know if he put a circle around it between those last two panels. If so, which color? This could very well be a case of "keep your enemies closer," and I'm leaning toward the idea that he does know...if for no other reason that there has to be *some* hope for Earth!

One more thought: if Spider-Man is revealed as a Skrull, will that undo that utterly stupid deal made with Mephisto in "One More Day?" God, I hope so!

I thought that whole Spider-Woman thing was interesting, because she's definitely one of Bendis' favorite 70s characters. If she's been a Skrull the whole time, ever since Bendis brought her back into the Marvel U. in a major way, that's pretty hard core. I guess the real Jessica Drew will be the star of the next-year ongoing Spider-Woman series that Bendis & Alex Maleev have been planning for a while. (which will be a Jessica Drew Agent of SHIELD-type thing, I think)

where are you guys getting your Secret Invasion checklist from? I was going over the list at Marvel.com but it seems i may be somehow missing some titles. damned crossovers.

Making the Avengers titles back-up stories for most of a year is sort of an odd decision, don't ya think? Them being meant to be flagships and all? But I'm surprisingly cool with it. Bendis has always done well with the one-off one issue stories and it means Secret Invasion won't be as rushed as Civil War, which spent so many pages launching tie-in titles it lost credibility and coherence.

That said, the Nick Fury issue wasn't a thriller. I've not encountered the Countess before, so this was just another issue in which Bendis gets one of his favourite characters laid before the plot moves along. As deduction methods go, following a suspect while invisible and overhearing a highly incriminationg chat in an alley way isn't subtle. It doesn't tell us much about the Skrull infiltration or Nick Fury, other than he knows.

And this latest Skrull back-up was heavy on exposition. Which probably needed to be done at some stage, but didn't make it the most enthralling read as a single issue. I thought Spider-Woman had a green chin from SI #1 anyway, calling her old buddies with Skrull Jarvis there in the background. But she's an important Skrull, top Skrull, because she was ideally placed to infiltrate and destroy. Really? Forgotten 70s character is keystone to hero hierarchy? Why not use Werewolf at Night too, just to make absolutely sure?

All way, way better than the Hood and Doom storylines, though.

Nice one.

I guess the Skrulls had foreseen (or caused to occur) that Spider-Woman would become part of the New Avengers and therefore be in a more key position (also her double-dealings with Nick Fury, HYDRA, closeness to their arch-enemy Tony Stark as a result of her Avengers membership, etc.)

SECRET INVASION #2 is out aannnd.... nothing really happens. the best part of it was the surprise guest at the Savage Land showdown and Frank Cho's She-Hulk in the back cover ad.

the Avengers [Mighty, New] that I read the other day [one focusing on Spider-Woman, the other in Skrull queen, another one on Fury] moved the plot better than the main crossover title.

and after JP's comment - yeah, pretty weird decisions. timing is off in the tie-ins.

Looking closely at Fury's board in Mighty Avengers 13 and comparing to the previous view in #12:

He's taken down the picture of Spider-Woman, and replaced it with some guy with rocky-looking shoulders. I don't think he wants anyone else to know all that he know quite yet. Unfortunately, without seeing which color circle he used on her, we can surmise nothing about the others circled. At this point I'm pretty sure one set represents confirmed skulls and the other represent confirmed heroes.

Namor is no longer circled in blue, Iron Man is.

A guy I don't recognize--with a beard and a blue glowing circle on his chest--is now circled in red...he wasn't before. Anyone recognize him?

My thoughts exactly. We just get a big, drawn-out scene about the might-be Skrulls and some stuff about the might-be-the-real-Mockingbird, thereby undoing her death years ago. Pacing, Bendis! I know you have 7 issues to fill, but really.

maybe it'll be 7 issues because he split issue 1 in two [hence all those double spreads in #2]... oops, doubled paycheck.

Found myself very confused by the Phobos kid in the Avengers ish. Just a kid with some deadbeat father who pretends he's an initiative participant so he can go bang hookers, right?

Agreed on the pacing. But I like the notion that everyone is scattered in the jungle, lost in the savage land with shapeshifters is not a good place to be.

Why did no one think that Mockingbird could just be a Skrull telepath?

Nope, that really is Ares, god of war and Mighty Avenger. He's kind of a jerk and to be fair he probably does 'bang hookers' as you so delightfully put it. What was genuinely confusing about Mighty Avengers #16 is how Layla Miller can know all stuff except that she's supposed to be in the future.

'bang hookers' was more meatheaded than i've ever gotten ever.

what disturbed me about dear layla in avengers was her sudden lolita vibe. her incarnation in x-factor: the quick and the dead was a lot more appropriate.

I assumed that was covered by this whole issue taking places "Six Months Ago".

You know what I was just thinking this afternoon? Back when he was writing Daredevil, Bendis' slow burning urban drama stuff was cool. But in Avengers? I mean... god damn. There should not be a single issue of the Avengers where something doesn't explode. They're Earth's Mightiest Heroes! Thor, and Cap, and Vision, and Iron Man, space gods and monsters from the planets core! Why does it feel like I'm reading fucking Avengers: Detroit or something? I love Spider-Man, no denying, but Spider-Man is really not all that powerful. And he's the most powerful person in New Avengers, yes? Not exactly Quasar or Scarlet Witch, I must say. And I love Nick Fury, but this is not Nick Fury's god damn book. And the last three issues of Avengers has been two issues of Nick Fury, Ex-Agent of SHIELD and one issue of Young Skrulls In Love. I just miss real crazy super hero stories, you know?

Ok. I'm done ranting. Feel free to ignore me.

Aside from the fact that I think Wolverine might win a fight against Spider-Man, what about Dr Strange? Or Iron Fist? Or Power Man? Just because Dr Strnage, Iron Fist and Power Man aren't as popular as Spider-Man at the moment, it doesn't mean that thay couldn't take him in a square go, right?

It's beginning to all seem a bit inverted, if that's the right word. As in there must be more important stuff for us to see in Secret Invasion #2 than a bunch of heroes punching Skrulls in the Savage Land. The whole world's been invaded, for fuck's sake. Finding out if this is the real Mockingbird should maybe be happening in an ancillary title, where the Skrull battle plan is unfolding instead. The back-ups have been good, especially this most recent Nick Fury one which was classic Bendis, but I'm not getting much sense that this is a big deal.

Also by now I could do with knowing some more about who's Skrulls and who isn't. Simplistic, perhaps, but the sooner we find out how nefarious this whole invasion is the easier it is to take the threat seriously. It's perhaps a minority opinion, but there's still a little bit too much He's not a Skrull... or is he?
