Here's a Novel Idea- Why Doesn't Everybody Near London Meet up in a Pub? (03/10/04)

I know it's a novel idea, but if we all meet up in a pub, with drinkage and smokage (for those so inclined) we might find we have lots of interest in common, else some people could get into a huddle and talk about geeky sci-fi stuff while the others talk about pop music and fashion...

Whatsay?

Suggestions for venues? I didn't in the end make it to the Saaf Lahnden thing, but do people want to repeat the experiment with a pub somewhere down there?

Oop North at a wedding that weekend, so no. In principle, though, yes.

I think I'll be around... been a while since I've seen everyone, so if I can make it I will...

If it's going to be a Sunday thing, could we do The Butcher's in Stokey? Hopefully we can have the pleasure of Mono doing karaoke since I always miss it.

stokey is so remote its like travelling to a different country - at least central london is, y'know, central.

A lot of people in London manage to travel from one end of the city to another for fun and profit on a regular basis, y'know. I mean, I know that sounds a bit easy for me to say given my location, but really, the way some 'Lithers talk about it... Anyway, Stokey sounds fine to me, a bit of variety might be nice.

I'd rather avoid Stokey, not out of any hostility to Stokey per se, just because it is on the opposite side of London, so it would be a bit tricky getting back. However, we have done the Dulwich barbemeet, and I would say the concentration of Barbeloids in Stokey is probably about as high as the concentration in SE London, so...

I dunno. I'd like central, if poss, but others may disagree...

But Central won't have Ms.Mono and others doing karaoke! In a really sleezy low-life pub reknowned far and wide for it's bad atmosphere and cheep beer!
Come on!

Having just moved to Stokey myself and joined all the other 'Lithers already there, Stokey would get my vote...but given that this is the first time i'm actually free to come to a meet up since the one I came to in May i'm not fussy...

and the karaoke does sound fun.....

Karaoki is not a plus point.

Dance only i'm affraid - Karioke tends to involve songs i dislike being sung badly - not a recipe for a good night out.

Instead of wine, women and song Karioke tends to provides a drunk woman singing.

This should not be taken as a comment on the lovely miss mono's singing or sobriety.

Oh don't make me...

Okay, we have one vote against Karaoke and a vote against Stokey. Oh Lady of all our hearts, how do you feel about these things? Who needs a tube line?

I love how a suggestion of South London leads to a discussion of going to Stoke Newington...

It seems our South London representatives are being a bit backward about coming forward. Where is everyone? I don't hugely object to Stokey, though I'd have to be convinced there are good places to drink up there...

Possibly a central compromise might be wise...

The only reason i was reluctant to name pubs is that i see nothing wrong with the chandos or the princess louise or the fitzrovia -

the Ben Crouch just off of oxford street will probably be quite empty on a sunday - its central and got a range of non sam smiths booze...

what say all youse?

Personally I heart the Fitzrovia and they do a nice thai green curry there. But the Ben Crouch is nice, too. Shall we vote?

Fitzrovia, deffo.

I like the Fitzrovia... but the Crouch has a better name. I'm torn.

ok, I give up. Being here in Stokey surrounded by pleasant and unpleasant drinking and eating places, I am reluctant to go to the centrals just to have a drink. There's just no real reason to not get to walk home after. And it helps my plan to become a hermit.
However, if any of the Stokers are interested in something a little different, I'll suggest the 7th of October for an alternative local event. (in another post obviously)
And to everyone else, hope you have a great time in the City!

How about somewhere a little bit further North but not so far that you need to get a bus as well as a train? Like Camden, or Islington way? We're spoilt for choice with the former (Lock Tavern?), and for the latter I'd recommend the Old Queen's Head on Essex Road...

I mean, for Sunday afternoon drinking the Fitzrovia is frankly crap. The Plough is a better idea for that kind of thing, if people absolutely insist.

Our Lady Won't Do That Again
12:46 / 27.09.04
Whereas Camden pubs on a Sunday afternoon (especially now the weather seems to be turning) are generally empty.

I'm just about ready to give up to be honest. I suggest South London, no-one any further south than North London wants to give an opinion. I suggest Stokey, suddenly people can't go any further north than Goodge Street or else their knees unscrew themselves. Now Flyboy seems to want to go to Camden because he's allergic to crowds, I mean, the fuck?!

If anyone wants me I'll be at home with a cup of warm Ribena.

A Haus of Minions
13:05 / 27.09.04
I think Flyboy's point is that Camden is within easy reach of Stokey and other points north by bus, but at the same time is on the tube map and so is practically speaking equivalent in reachability to Goodge Street...

Now, I would be v. happy with South London, but given that I'm getting off a plane from the US on Saturday at 6:30am and having to head straight into town, I'm not sure I'll be up for any jollity on Sunday. As a more general principle, one could maybe recommend centrality for weeknights, since most of us work in the centre, and afternoon chillage for Barbelith North and Barbelith South, thus creating a mighty schism?

Fly Beezy (War Minister)

I'm up for some drinking, don't really care about the location.

Do people in London ever do pub crawls, I mean start somewhere like that cheapo Witherpants on Leicester Square and then wander around a few places, maybe even trying somewhere new?

How about Soho?
How about Forest Hill?

How about The Plough.

In closing, drinking yes please.

sleazenation
16:38 / 27.09.04
People in London do indeed do pub crawls but they are impracticle for groups larger than say 5 or 6 - not to mention the fact they make finding a seat a recurring annoyance rather than a one off-irritant...

I'm totally uncommitted to alcohol. Can we not go for tea and cake at Patisserie Valerie's in Soho instead? They do milkshakes.

Don't say that I'm still getting over that Buffy meet I went to where everyone drunk milkshake.

I don't want to see you all sober, it's icky.

And Lady, cut the kermefoozle, if you want to go out for a drink in South London than name a place rather than getting pissy because the rest of us are equally as hopeless as you. And if you don't know a place than pm one of the tolederos who live there. The point being that I'll turn up wherever it is, being more concerned with company than location.

You're all unable to process social drinking, and therefore schizophrenic.
