Me being the huge fan of the Bruce Timm animated DCU stuff, I checked out the Superman/Doomsday new direct-to-video animated movie. If the last two seasons of Timm's JLU were a 10 out of 10, this first offering from DC's new direct-to-video program gets a 9 out of 10 for me. Aside from a few weird moments or weak bits, I found it totally entertaining and at times, very inventive and bold. Adam Baldwin doesn't sound totally right as Superman, but after you get used to him for a while, it pretty much works. Same thing with Anne Heche as Lois, although I'd say I warmed to her Lois quicker than I did to Baldwin's Supes.
James Marsters (yes, that Buffy guy) totally rocks as Luthor. A unique take on Luthor's voice & style that completely works from moment 1.
Check it out. I'd say it's worth buying or renting; not quite as good as the best of JLU but still quite good.
Next on the DC direct-to-video plate: NEW FRONTIER, which Darwyn Cooke himself is putting together with Bruce Timm & Co. That should really be something special. A trailer/preview of the video, now online, seems to reveal that they will actually use JFK's real speech as the v/o recording for the finale of the film, as in the comic. Joy! |
