Right now I am currently in the middle of reading one of the newer translations. I just am interested in what some other peoples experiences with it are.

If that's the one with the descriptive phrase "cock like a trip-hammer", I enjoyed its modernised, witty and quietly cool take on the poem.

If it's not, I don't know. Which translation is it?

I'm more referring to the Andrew George translation. (Not sure what your's is) It's very enjoyable on it's own but can be problematic due to fragmentary nature of the source.

That modern translation sounds good, you got a link?

Gilgamesh is a pretty cool story, mainly because you can read it literally or symbolically. I mean, Enkidu the wildman- an actual wild man or part of Gilgamesh's Ego?

An actual wild man.

Legba, the new translation referred to above (with the "cock like a trip-hammer" line) is by Derrek Hines, and was published in 2004. It is very, very similar (and no doubt was inspired by) Christopher Logue's "War Music."

I'm about to read a translation for my Ancient Near Eastern history class. Fascinating cultures.

Anybody ever read the Enuma Elish?

Is that the one with the flood?

Sort of. Both the Gilgamesh and the Enuma Elish had a profound and obvious influence on the Bible. With the Enuma Elish, it sounds exactly like Genesis.

Anyone know where a decent, printable online version of Gilgamesh can be found?
