I don't know, it's just seemed unfun recently. I guess I'd like to see a warmer tone.

Well, picking up on the Barbenice idea - maybe the swift booting of useless threads into Convo, but without personal acrimony - so, a simple "In the opinion of this moderator, tis discussion is not dealing with subject matter or in a manner appropriate to the Temple. A move to Conversation has been proposed; anyone who wishes to post to this thread should be aware that it may move at some point in the near future."

It leaves Convo to deal with stuff, but it might be a way of dealing with something like "Do you remember the first time". Mind you, At least one contribution to that was interesting and worth reading... but it would have been as much so in the Conversation, I suppose.

I don't know about fun, but I think that the best way possible to counter any perceived malaise is to generate good quality content. I genuinely don't have the time to do this at the moement, or I'd try and start a couple of threads. But I'd suggest the usual... good thoughtful posts, coming at familar subjects from new angles, ideas that have been bugging you for ages, considered accounts of experience and so forth.

Considered accounts of experiences in porn sigils, perhaps. Fun!

Rex Feral
16:53 / 08.11.07
Well, to be honest, that's a good case in point. I personally don't think sigils work in that way - i.e. mass "charging" - but I don't think it matters necessairily as someone is trying something interesting. I can either jump down his throat 'cos I disagree with him/don't like porn etc or I could encourage a discussion of the ethics of pornographphy and the relationship of this to magic, and sigil mechanics. Looking at the thread, I see this already kind of happened a couple of years ago.

So, the idea of a Temple orientation thread... do people want to see that happen, or was it a daft idea? What about the zero-tolerance in the Temple thing?

Only the thing is, if most of the feedback on something is generally positive and the only people openly offering criticism are talking about MASSIVE POWER ISSUES, I'm going to assume I'm on the right track. If people think this is the wrong direction to be heading in I'd really like to hear from them.

I would. Zero-tolerance is fine for me, too.

Then again, I may have MAZZIVE PWER ESHOOZ.

Yes, do it. Please don't call it "zero-tolerance" though. I have a reflexive disgust for anything that bears that title (too many "goofy" news stories about principals expelling students for hugging each other or turning up at school with nail clippers).

So, the idea of a Temple orientation thread... do people want to see that happen, or was it a daft idea? What about the zero-tolerance in the Temple thing?

I think the problem is the subject matter is always going to attract marginalised people, or perhaps to put it more nicely, people heavily into their own trip. So, I'm not sure how much orientation/good advice would do. (As it's ultimately not by proper moderataion powers any good intentions one has are somewhat compromised anyway.)

To me, they I think it'll always be a struggle to get good and interesting posting in an obscure subject area - the real way forwards is I suspect to generate good quality content for yourself, in such volumes that it buries dross under mounds of brillance, and encourages others to post to the same high standard. I might be dragged out of my shell more frequently if I saw several discussions I wanted to contribute to. There seems to me to be of an imbalance between worrying about what others are saying (or might say) and saying stuff for oneself.

Re. Tolerance. I don't see why the Temple should be more tolerant of prejudical shit than the rest of Barbelith, really. So, "zero tolerance" doesn't come into it for me.

Alex's Grandma said: Obviously, that's exactly what he's saying.

Chrysis said: Hmm, Let's allow Glenn, speak for himself, AG. I am certain he is more than capable of it.

Glenn says: Well, no, I didn't say that being intolerant of anti-semitism is synonymous with being a power-tripper. In fact, being intolerant of anti-semitism is to my mind a Very Good Thing Indeed, whatever form that anti-semitism might take. I do think the idea of calling a Temple zero-tolerance policy or similar a 'power surge' is fairly funny, though, in light of my-not-exactly-serious question about Mordant's 'Massive Power Issues', and if you think it through it's a joke against me rather than anybody else.

An aside: I think that it's possible in certain very specific circumstances for people with sound politics and sound hearts to become a little too into the buzz of righteousness that identifying and condemning seemingly prejudicial attitudes gives them. Furthermore, in a context in which such acts of identifying and condemning are also rewarded with social cache, this might just lead to them being carried out when they are not really warranted. Now, such circumstances / contexts are very, very rare, but they do now and then crop up, and I think it's perhaps useful for people of sound politics and hearts to interrogate themselves as to exactly why they have chosen to identify / condemn something as a prejudice, when there are other available and credible readings. Like any other ability, the ability to critically deconstruct a given statement for evidence of prejudice is in certain extremely rare situations a social (and, yes, even a power) advantage, and one that is open to misapplication and even abuse. While I'd of course prefer a world in which, say, the swaggering anti-misogynist was a more familiar figure than the swaggering misogynist, swaggering is never a good look - especially, I'd argue, for anybody who aspires to the ranks of the sensitive or the thoughtful.

I'll end with the hopes that a) the above won't be misinterpreted as an iteration of 'PC Gone Mad!', b) the above won't be misinterpreted as a pop at any individual on the board, and c) the above won't be misinterpreted as an attempt to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Which is one of the reasons why I didn't respond to him, Roy.

But, I will put on ignore. I do feel there is something wrong with his behaviour. Generally when there is an irritant in my eye I am inclined to use the eyewash.

My apologies for sidetracking this thread... I should have realized what I was inviting.

Anyway, I would like to change my opinion slightly to echo Roy, as Roy stated it quite nicely. The Temple shouldn't have to put with any situation that is not acceptable elsewhere on Barbelith. Zactly.

Perhaps one way round this might be if The Temple was untied, gently, from the notional flotilla of ships that is Barbelith, and allowed to sail off into wider seas?

I wouldn't presume to speak for anyone else, but as one of the last few radioactive zombies left on a website that's apparently been nuked from outer space, I'm not sure I'd miss it. It's easy enough not to read the thing, of course, but a lot of the nonsense, honestly, that's generated over there does, I think, infect the rest of the board.

So I'm thinking 'Go Temple, run wild, run free ...'

Sure. While we're at it, we can both build fences around our discussion boards. You can make sure anyone who tries to register who is already registered in Temple is automatically shot dead, and we can make sure anyone who tries to register in Temple who is you is automatically beaten about the head with a sock full of coconuts until the twitching stops. It would work beautifully. The technology already exists, it's simply a matter of implementing it. Along with training the high-quality border-patrol Chihuahua wolves, of course.

Tom?

Okay, I don't think this is really going to get anyone anywhere. We've had some discussion in the past of the "Temple catflap" effect, and while there's certainly more than a grain of truth there it's not the whole story. However, whatever the future holds we currently have a The Temple, and as long as we have it then discussion about the proper moderation thereof seems like a good thing to have too.

If people genuinely feel strongly that The Temple is having a deleterious effect on the rest of the board, that should really be the subject of a new thread. Otherwise, back to modding the sucker.

Well, there is that, dude. But on the other hand, "I was JOKING!1!!" has rather shaky precedent around these parts defence-wise.

Glenn: in your case, I think it's unfortunate but the above is doubly true. The kind of humour you often go for--saying something self-evidently ludicrous to generate amusment--kind of relies on the reader being able to say, with confidence "Nah, so-and-so would never mean that seriously." You need a sort of store of goodwill, or at least a fairly well-established character as someone who would not seriously say such a thing, for the joke to work. Perhaps racheting back on that kind of humour for a while would be a good idea.

I'd also suggest that saying things along the lines of, "Of course I didn't mean [extreme version of argument x]! But I do mean [less extreme version of argument x]," don't really lend themselves very well to the assertion that [extreme version of argument x] is so ludicrous that it should be clear you wouldn't entertain such thoughts.

PLEASE GRANNY AND GLENN FUCK OFF OUT OF THIS THREAD PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO WORK. You have a whole board to spam, please for the love of Compo go elsewhere so we can have a discussion about moderating the fucking temple, AS THE TITLE OF THE THREAD SUGGESTS.
Are there any Policy mods about? It's like trying to talk to someone about work while a pair of screaming toddlers spit chocolate at each other and swing off your arms pretending to be monkeys- charming and fun in another context perhaps, but here, irritating like being repeatedly kicked in the bollocks.
Please Glenn. Pick another thread to troll. Please Granny. Go and harass Norah Batty. Sometimes you are both very witty and funny and I appreciate your contributions to the board when they're in the appropriate place, but this thread is not it. Practice your iron self restraint and post elsewhere please.

Now, ontopic- I'm behind what Mordant is proposing, let's try and thrash out some stuff for the thread. The zero tolerance, as Roy says, is across the board- I don't see it as an issue.

PLEASE GRANNY ... FUCK OFF OUT OF THIS THREAD PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO WORK.

00:16 / 18.11.07
No Granny, some people actually give a shit. You however clearly don't, so why don't you take on board what Quantum has so nicely asked and just remove yourself from a thread that you are only visiting to take the piss?

Glenn Close But No Cigar
01:22 / 18.11.07
While I can appreciate what Quantum / Olulabelle are saying, 'Work' does seem like a particularly bad choice of words to describe what is, essentially, a hobby. Not that I want to speak for Alex's Grandma, but personally I believe his/her point is not that the whole enterprise of a Modding the Temple thread is dumb, but that describing it as work just might be over-egging the pudding. It's sort of like people getting a bit too agitated over just who exactly will be the treasurer of the village's flower arranging soc.
