Yeah let's get all those out of the way now.

Brokeback Batman! It could be like, y'know, that one story! What was it? A Dark Knight's Tale? Oh, KNIGHTFALL.

someone on Aint It Cool News boards, amidst all the nonsense, said that Ledger's performance in LORDS OF DOGTOWN (the movie about the first extreme skater-dudes) shows some nice manic/wacked-out energy that might be evocative of the Joker. Might be worth looking into; as I've heard that movie is decently entertaining.

Now the only question is will Ledger be the wonderfully psychotic supervillain of the comics and original series, or the barefoot, dread-locked monkey man of the horrendous "The Batman" series? Personally I'm glad they went with a younger, less popular actor instead of an older one who's constantly in the media. This means he wont be showing off for the camera and trying to prove that "he's still got it". This could really be Ledger's time to shine; I mean, come on people, this is the Joker we're talking about here, not some cowboy with a speech impediment.

Quoi?

Certainly wouldn't be my first choice, Ledger, but oh-ho-ho it's well worth it for the gay jokes, eh? Does raise the interesting possibility of him teaming up with other Brother Grimm, Guy Pearce, as Two-Face, which I'd like to see. Nolan doesn't, however, to my knowledge seem to maintain a stable of actors for his flicks; can't think offhand of any he's reused?

Any word yet on whether the Scarecrow will be coming back or whether they are cutting him loose, seeing as everyone was able to beat him up in the first episode? I did like the first film but found the Scarecrow the only bad thing in the whole confection, and even specifically the Scarecrow with a mask on, as otherwise Cillian Murphy was alright. So I'm a bit worried about Heath Ledger being picked for the Joker.

That was Matt Damon.

Well the motel manager in Memento popped up in Batman Begins as Detective Flass, and Nolan's new film, The Prestige, stars Christian Bale and Michael Caine...

anything other than Jack Nicholson is good to me.
Just hoping he'll pinch Bat's ass like in Arkham Asylum.

I'm impressed at how many film facts I managed to get incorrect in a short post, there. I must be thinking of Ledger in TBG as Pearce? WTF?!?! Anyway, Pearce'd be alright for Harvey Dent regardless of my incompetence.

Just so long as Ledger-as-Joker's catchphrase doesn't turn out to be 'Whankers!' that photo looks fairly promising ...

Thats been doing the rounds for a while now, it's not an offical poster at all, it's a Photoshop fan job. The photo is of Conrad Veidt from the 1928 film "The Man Who Laughs", which was one of the inspirations for the Joker.

Given that they've just started pre-production of The Dark Knight, should we start a seperate speculation thread for that?

Brian de Palma's BLACK DHALIA uses some of the scenes from THE MAN WHO LAUGHS and they're creepy indeed.

a recent COMIC REEL column at CBR has info on production of a batbike for THE DARK KNIGHT.

i was trying to fing a Brian Bolland illustration and came across these panels from the KILLING JOKE:

and Ledger here kinda looks like it, even though he was younger in the pic.

Ledger has been giving "The Killing Joke" to read to familiarise himself with the type of Joker he'll be playing in The Dark Knight. Alan Moore will be..pleased.

I did like the first film but found the Scarecrow the only bad thing in the whole confection, and even specifically the Scarecrow with a mask on, as otherwise Cillian Murphy was alright.

I think they misued Scarecrow-in-full-gear by defeating him so early - bit of rushed pacing there- but I get the feeling they wanted to introduce the madness infecting Batman's rouge's gallery gradually, hence the larger focus on Al Ghul.

Seeing him shriek after being tasered in the face was also hilarious.

I really hope they bring the Scarecrow back even for a cameo or two to maintain the continuity between movies and to build up the fact that Batman's foes are 5-star loonies.

From the Ledger interview:

I’m not going for the same thing he went for. That would be stupid. It is also two very different directors with different styles. Tim Burton did a more fantastical kind of thing and Chris Nolan is doing nitty gritty handheld realism. I love what [Jack] did and that is part of why I want to do that role. I remember seeing it and thinking how much fun it would be to put on that mask and attempt to do something along those lines. But it would obviously be murder if I tried to imitate what he did.

That's a very good sign.

Don't know if it's the definitive make-up or a test for make-up (or even if it's actually Ledger. It seems so, but it's so damn blurry I couldn't give my 100% confirmation).

Anyways... looks more like Nicholson.
(hoping Nolan will rip an unbelievable acting&character from a good actor; and hoping that's not the definitive make-up)

Whilst I'd like to see him again, I'm not too unhappy with the Scarecrow going out the way he did. It's good to have a few b-list villains around, helps to highlight who the really scary baddies are.

Joker venom plus Se7en? Or art? I'm hoping art, because as dead-heads, they're about on par with some of Greg Nicotero's cheesiest prop-bodyparts.

Should we do up a new thread for the new movie, now that they're filming? Or keep all the fan speculation pinned to this old one?

Might as well keep it here until there's at least a preview. Otherwise it'll just be a long spec thread that'll have to be locked in a handful of months.

Also, hoping that they play up the detective in this one, in the same way that they played up the ninja in the last.

I do want to see plenty more ninja action, though.
