Fan Myths

It's hot, so everyone has fans around, I went into the newsagents and he had a fan pointing at the chocolate. Stupid man, I thought, that won't cool the chocolate down.

Mentioning this at work, it started an argument about whether or not fans cool things down, so I thought I'd bring the debate to Barbelith.

A fan will cool you down because you sweat, and it helps the sweat evaporate faster, cooling you down. If you point it at your computer it will cool it down because your computer creates heat, and the fan will blow the hot air away allowing cooler air to replace it. It won't cool chocolate down because chocolate doesn't sweat or produce heat.

My workmates didn't believe me, "Fans cool things down" they said, do you?

Not everyone on the Warren Ellis Forum has named their children 'Warren' or 'Ellis'. Or, indeed, 'Forum'.

Well I have a fan in frotn of me right now and the air coming from it is cool. I assume if I pointed it at some chocolate then the air around the snack would be at a lower temperature than elsewhere.

Anyway even if it doesn't work this shopkeeper should applauded. There is nothing worse than buying gooey, melted chocolate.

How do fans make you feel cooler?

Hope that clears it up.

Fans can stop chocolate melting, or certainly cool it below ambient temperature. It's a little more complicated, or simpler, depending on your point of view, than "blowing away the hot air," and the source of the heat is pretty immaterial.

Ignore my last post please. I reckon you'd get a slight cooling effect during daylight, because the air would have absorbed less heat than the chocolate. But that's about it. It might be enough to help though.

It's too hot.

Fans make people cooler. Cooler people are likely to wear less clothing than warmer people. People wearing less clothing may lead to impure thoughts. Impure thoughts may lead to sodomy. Sodomy may lead to dancing.

This is why fans are forbidden by God.

..dancing will make people hot, and they will resort to fans, and thus the cycle of evil continues...
