Bump.

Because I'm bored at work and someone tried to convert me to the Light of Christ™ a couple of hours ago, I went hunting and found this delightful little tract featuring a revisionist's perspective on the history of the Roman Catholic Church. I think it's interesting that despite his blatant delusions and historical inaccuracy, Chick manages to point out a couple historical points that many Catholics don't realize, mainly the political importance of Constantine's conversion. Also I was amused that Chick suggested that the origins of traditional Catholic symbolism were based in earlier religions, even if he did misinterpret and/or completely skew this connection for his own purposes.

Most interesting, I thought (and entertaining as well), was that while Chick discusses at length the origins of Catholicism being EVIL and whatnot, he fails to mention the fact that virtually every modern form of Christianity has it's roots in early Catholicism (I just can't picture Chick as a Gnostic). I'm also curious how Chick reconciles the hypocrisy of spouting off random verses of the bible willy-nilly, when the Bible he reads is the selection of books chosen by the early church founders he vilifies.

Meh.

The best thing about Jack Chick comics is surely the "conversion moment" that occurs in so many of them - that wonderful point at which the hitherto fierecely convinced sceptic or fanatical Muslim folds like a bad hand of cards. Here's a classic:

I think the Christian evangelists out there should sue Chick for false advertising, unless they're really finding it that easy. Having said which, Chick's recent work teaches some pretty sophisticated rhetorical techniques - check out the bait-and-switch employed by this dude:

Ah! AHHHHH! Do you SEE?

Guys like this almost make me ashamed of following the teaching of the Nazarene. But then I remember they are not actually following the teaching of the Nazarene, but advocating a form of "Christianism" based mostly in the Old Testament and psalms and some parts of the Gospels that were quite possibly invented after Jesus' death (and supposedly resurection) and put in His mouth to better convince people they "have" to convert to "be saved". Thank Allah and the Orixás I believe in a much more lay-back, "let-it-be", ecumenic form of Catholicism (which sometimes I think only exists in my country), so screw them.

What would Jesus do? He would probably tell this guy Chick to "mind your own life, you hypocrite" (Matthew; 7,1-5)

oh, well.

It's actually a pretty smooth argument on his part, if odd as hell. By saying that the Catholic Church is EVIL, he can then claim that only the bad religions have violent history. Crusades? Not his brand of Christianity, it was the Antichrist Pope! His brand of Christianity is nothing but peace! AND it exists because God's Will says so, despite Rome's EVIL. (sort of like a Philip K Dick book)

And for the bible, I think one of the tracts explained that it was God-ordained ineffiable plan stuff that gave us the bible, so even though it was put together by EVIL it was God's Will that made it what it is....

Now I've wasted hours reading the Chick Tracts - I've come to one conclusion:

I'm scared of "Uncle Bob".

I think his eyes are supposed to be blue, but... I don't know, if a impeccably dressed man came up to me all polite and the like, with neatly swept-back black hair, and a little moustache a step above Hitler’s style, with piercing pale blue eyes -

- I'd be very inclined to jump whatever boat he's in.
