This is crazy! here's the link : link

JB: America has been trying for the hundred years of so to "make the world a better place". What this has earned us is the contempt of our "friends", and the emnity of people who think their own master plans—usually including religious fervor and the subjugation of minorities, including women—are so much better than that freedom and democracy crap.
——The only acceptable response, now that we are officially in a new world, is for the American government to go Old Testament on these motherfuckers. Operation Flaming Sword. Find them and kill them. And kill their wives, their children, their mothers, their fathers, their brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles, butchers, bakers, candlestick makers. Go Super-Israel, and let them know what it =feels= like to be "at war" with the United States.
——Gotta think there were some raised spirits in Israel after yesterday, too. Those shots of Palestinians dancing in the streets and passing out celebratory candy knocked any hopes Yassir Araffat might have had right out the window.
——Welcome to the future.

hey since it had this at the bottom lets not tell JB you got it from me

I always imagined a trip to a John Byrne site would be like a trip to Hell.

Tomorrow I may borrow my roommate's "John Byrne Should Have Died In Crisis" shirt.

Are you for real? Is there a source? I had the idea Byrne was a vaguely liberal lefty type...

god, that pissed me off. I usually don't type with venom, but this time, I'm willing to forego positive communication for outright malice. F*cking hack used to be a good, thoughtful writer, and Canadian to boot. Now he's just another psycho nut. Good riddance, I just wish he didn't move next door.

He is a very vocal republican. He once said that people with aids should have all been quarantined. He seems to have no problem with homosexuals though.

I'm reminded of that crappy old Kenny Everett character from the '80s, the US Colonel with the oversized shoulders:

Gosh, so the architect of a world in which hypermuscular strongmen beat the crap out of each other to preserve the free world has a belligerent and adolescent view of world events?

You know, the shocks just keep on coming.

Could you please call him John Byrne, rather than JB? I keep on thinking I've said somethin off when I see people criticising JB.

Otherwise, I shall have to change my name...

I think likening John Byrne to Hitler is a bit much.

I am tempted to change the thread title because it is rather offensive, although I imagine I am the only who thinks so...

"I've said for years that with the feminization of American culture that we were weakening ourselves. Friends of mine will tell you that I've often expressed the sentiment, "If we ever have to fight a war how can we win when it's politically incorrect to hate our enemy?"
This was brought to crystalline focus when Navy crewmen were admonished for writing "Happy Ramadan" on the heads of some missiles during a retaliatory strike in Iraq a few years ago. How can you mass kill the thousands necessary to win a war without taking away their human status? That may sound cold. It IS cold. But that's the way it is."

I completely agree with this statement. Its one thing to look down the barrel of your gun and see an animal that would kill you and entire country, its quite another to see a young boy with hopes and dreams all his own.

I think that soldiers can fight without loathing the enemy.

the soldiers playing soccer with each other in the fields in World War I, singing Christmas carrols to each other in one of the world wars, I forget which one.

but then racism must play a part as does the difference between seeing the face of the other soldier and destroying combatants and civilians without ever seeing a human face or body.

which relates to the de-humanization aspect, for sure...

Heard this story about the Korean War: Right on the front lines, the Americans and Chinese (or Chinese-supported North Koreans, I'm not sure which) were going at it hammer and tongs. Then word of the cease-fire, the one that still holds at the 38th Parallel to this day (the Korean War isn't over!), came down, and both sides just stopped shooting. One of those deafening silences, I suppose.

So, anyway, there's this sudden feeling of spontaneous jubilation on both sides, as the soldiers realize that, after all this time, they're not going to die horribly at the hands of another human being. Some American soldiers venture across into the no-man's-land and are welcomed by the enemy as brothers-in-arms. These Americans come back bearing presents from the other side. What, exactly, the story doesn't say, and I'd imagine there was no gift shop in the war zone, so I couldn't even begin to guess.

Of course, the officers fuck it all up by charging the men who went over with fraternizing with the enemy. This is why we let the officers go first in any combat situation.

But my point here is this: Any soldier with half a brain knows that they are the victims of policy. I know this because I used to be a soldier myself. We'd just as soon say "fuck it" and go home, but we freely swore an oath to follow all lawful orders. No one said anything about liking it, though.

First off, in defense of Byrne -- a lot of good people felt exactly the way that he did on that day. It was a rage that was honest and real and based in horror at what happened -- there should be a point when a person can see something so incredibly wrong and evil and call a spade a spade. I don't think a person should hold on to that anger - that makes them exactly like the people who did this - but they should be obliged to feel the way they do and not censor themselves. I would hope that in the past few days Mr. Byrne has cooled down some, and is feeling a little less hellbent on destruction as he was in those moments.

Second, I find it surprising that anyone would be shocked to learn that the writers of some of the most creatively conservative comics on the racks would be politically conversative as well..

I can't really say much more about a lack of rational thought in these individuals than I can about the same condition in anyone else.

Byrne: "They're really into what I call 'religious fervor.' You guys better go all 'Old Testament' on them!"
Dixon: "You can tell I'm insightful because I'm incapable of imagining a war where mass killings of thousands aren't necessary. Please, dehumanize them based on their religious views and ethnicity (which may be shared by our allies) instead of the fact they have a fucking gun pointed at your head."

This is what I see when I read their words.

I've always assumed Byrne to be somewhere to the right of Attila the Hun. Just look what happens every time he takes up an environmental issue (well, both times in Namor)- he has a bunch of poorly researched Earth-First stand-in murderous eco-terrorists killing lots of people to save the environment. Look at his one take on union politics in Iron Man- he's got them throwing molotovs from a monster truck and calling Jim Rhodes an Uncle Tom. Yeah, real unbiased writing there. His version of present-day Germany from Namor seems to be completely populated by Nazi skinheads. He's never shown the slightest interest in getting inside the heads of any of his "villains", he's been quoted as hating the whole "holocaust survivor" angle on Magneto- according to him a bad guy is a bad guy is a bad guy. His politics remind me of that old Steve Ditko comic "A"- a kind of fascist absolutism, how did it go? "A is A. A is not B. A thing can never be something that it is not." Something like that.
And yes, comparing John Byrne to Adolph Hitler is offensive. Hitler was a much better painter.

There's a huge story on Byrne's latest and historical antics over at All the Rage, the rumor column (formerly done by Rich Johnston) over at www.silverbulletcomicbooks.com. The litany of Byrne's ridiculousness just goes on and on, and halfway through I was just so disgusted I skimmed the rest.

But here's a good one from Mark Waid:

>> As Waid reported on Joe Quesada's boards:
To clarify: You would be mistaken. I have already been banned for calling into question John's recent armchair-quarterback comments about "How Gorilla Comics went wrong" and the way he insulted George Perez, Barry Kitson, Mike Wieringo and all the other Gorilla partners by lumping them together as second-rate talents who were just "the guys Kurt and Mark could get."

>> I registered, posted a response, and within ten minutes it was deleted and my membership was cancelled.

Although based off what someone earlier said in this thread, I notice I'm not the only one who, until now, thought Byrne was more liberal, given his often touchy-feely humanistic themes in FF and his continued insertion of gay characters into his books.

"That other story is BATMAN, remember?"

No, John, we don't remember; it's only one of the most iconic comic stories ever. Could you tell us about it again? And again? And again?

Even over three decades ago and before your fame you were already staring up your own asshole.

It just keeps getting worse...

from All The Rage at silver bullet comic books:

>> After last week, you’d think that running another John Byrne item would simply be redundant. But then Byrne goes and says something like this…

JB: Personal prejudice: Hispanic and Latino women with blond hair look like hookers to me, no matter how clean or "cute" they are. Somehow those skin tones that look so good with dark, dark hair just don't work for me with lighter shades.

Byrne’s comment was in response to the newly released pictures of the Fantastic Four cast in costume. In particular, Jessica Alba as Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman.

When posters on his board pointed out the racism inherent in his statement...

>> Byrne chimed in again:

JB: What we've seen here today is an all too typical example of an all too typical attitude: those who are the loudest to defend their "freedom of speech" are the quickest to try to slap down anyone whose "speech" differs from theirs. The standard "all opinions are valid as long as I agree with them".

JB: Interestingly, of all the "lurkers" who have flocked here to be "offended" today (as well as one or two regulars) NONE are Hispanic or Latino women who have dyed their hair blond.

Ironically, while Byrne sees no problem with his own comments, he shows little tolerance in another thread, in which several posters refer to Red Tornado as “Reddy”:

>> And as soon as you're all members of the JLA it will be fine for you to call your fellow members by cutesy poo knick-names, too. Until then, how about a little respect for these characters you supposedly love so much?
