Gunbuster and Gunbuster II (heavy spoilers)
Gunbuster is a 1988 six episode mini series by Hideaki Anno who went on to make Neon Genesis Evangelion. It depicts a future in which young soldiers fighting a war light years from home become separated from everything that's important to them as near light speed travel makes a moment for them last months on Earth.
