The Barbelith Film Project

From Barbelith

What is it?

Some of us Barbelithians with an interest in filmmaking (some of us amateurs, some of us experienced vets) have decided to put it to good use. We're hoping to wind up with a 10-30 minute short having something to do with a dead sci-fi author, reanimation in android bodies, philosophical questions of identity, creativity, and the authenticity of our memories, a missing bathroom, and a poem about a boat. Our budget is as close to £0 ($0) as is humanly possible.

Lucy, you got some splainin' to do!

Until I get around to cutting and pasting all of the brainstorming we've done so far, you can find much much more information about the project in this thread (http://barbelith.com/topic/19963/).

Who's doing what?

(the jobs listed here are neither final nor definitive)

Benny the Ball (http://barbelith.com/profile/4422) - sound (grip, mixing), possible directing (London), possible scriptwriting, possible production management (by this I assume you mean set design, lighting, wardrobe, finding/securing locations, etc. - pretty much simply making sure all the little details are right)

TeN (http://barbelith.com/profile/4548) - general production/management (basically just getting shit organized and coordinating everyone), art direction/storyboarding (I want at least some say in how it's going to look), design (opening credit sequence, website, promos, etc.), scriptwriting, possible editing

The Arch Drude of Goofballs (prev. Copey's bag of 1000 trips) (http://barbelith.com/profile/5067) - directing (London), possible editing

Impulsivelad, Scribe of Thoth (http://barbelith.com/profile/64) - story, scriptwriting

Ender (http://barbelith.com/profile/3374) - promotion (basically just getting this thing into festivals), possible other stuff (you said you once had a short in Sundance... you must have some other film skills that you might be able to contribute)

PatrickMM (http://barbelith.com/profile/1614) - directing (NY), possible scriptwriting, equipment

Finderwolf For Change (http://barbelith.com/profile/265) - acting (NY)

sttab (http://barbelith.com/profile/402) - production manager, possible camera work, possible location scouting, possible set dressing, possible costume making/finding, possible transportation, possible acting (London/UK)

Meludreen (http://barbelith.com/profile/5068) - scriptwriting

How can I help?

We're currently in need of the following:

- actors (especially in the UK/London)
- locations (details to come)
- filming equipment (especially in the UK/London)
- props and costume (details to come)

although any one who thinks they can offer something is welcome to help out (see below)

Great! Now where do I sign up?

If you feel you have something to offer, tell us about it by posting in the thread. We are planning to do most of the filming in the U.K. (see more about that below), but don't let location stop you - we're doing our best to accomodate everyone and we can more than likely fit you in somewhere.

London and NY?! What's the deal?

You may have noticed that certain jobs in the list of participants are denoted with either "London" or "NYC." It was quickly discovered that there was one major problem with making a movie over the internet - location, location, location. As people began to step forward offering to help out, we were faced with the dillema of where the filming was going to take place. We had two directors in the UK, but our only actor, and another director (who also knew where to get some free equipment), were all the way on the other side of the Atlantic. How to reconcile? Well fortunetly for us, everyone who wants to be involved in the production stage lives in or around either NY or London. So here's the solution that we've come up with - the main part is filmed in London, and in NY we film "dream sequences/flashbacks/imaginings of the protagonist's plots (from his novels)" etc. And we figure that "the differences in actors, director, and even equipment will provide a style and feel seperate from that of the main portion of the film." So yes, London and NY.

I want to contribute to the script... where do I go to get my write on?

Why right here, my young lad/lass: The Barbelith Film Project Script

Progress (or lack thereof)

15/01/05: Impulsivelad writes a rough draft of the script

22/01/05: TeN rewrites Impulsivelad's draft

??/02/05: Meludreen and PatrickMM express interest in helping with the script. Both give suggestions and Meludreen makes yet another rewrite

16/04/05: TeN makes the script public on the wiki and encourages anyone who feels up to it to contribute to it's development
