I've filled in some basics but this needs links. If anyone can describe the process of reformatting and reinstalling in a bit more detail I'd appreciate it - it's been ages since I've done that.

I've increased the page extensively, added a bunch of links and thrown in a load of general advice. the only thing missing is advice on Macs. If someone could add that, it would be useful.
This is an awesome page, fellows.
I have a Mac question, though -- I've had to tweak the firewall settings to get BitTorrent files to work properly. Is there a standard, acceptable way to do this? I sort of felt like a monkey being led through the dark with a big stick, being told to club various objects in the hopes that one of them was a banana tree.
