PANEL 2:  “Vanguard, will you carry me into battle?”

Justin is reunited with Vanguard. Some time must have passed while Justin found his way out of Castle Revolving (where we saw him kill Galahad) and located Vanguard. This gives Vanguard time to drop Zatanna and Misty off someplace safe before meeting up with his master.

Wasn't this bit in flashback?

You know... you are absolutely right. When I read it, I got it that the last three pages were a flashback showing how Justin became a knight, but for some reason I thought the very last three panels were taking place in the present. I know what it was: I read Guardian #4 and Klarion #4 first, and those both end with the hero charging off to join the battle about to take place in Seven Soldiers #1, so I had that formula in my head. But, of course, now that I look closely, Vanguard clearly says that they are going to Castle Revolving, which is where we first saw them in issue #1. Doh!

I was doing all sorts of mental gymnastics trying to figure out how Justin could be riding off on Vanguard if Vanguard was still with Zatanna and Misty at the end of Z#3, and all for naught. Oh, well.  :-)
