Summer's End is the name of the Sheeda's "terrible and distant homeland." Summer's End is the planet Earth, ...One Billion Years in the future. The Sun has expanded into a blistering Red Giant, Earth's orbit is deteriorating, and the oceans have boiled away. Black flowers that thrive on red sunlight and fluorocarbons cover the planet's surface. All of the planet's resources have been consumed or polluted. The last surviving humans, now known as the Sheeda, cling stubbornly to life by using their supremely advanced technology to raid past civilizations of their resources and cultural achievements.
