How does this thing work?

Well, you can look at Laboratory for more formatting tips.

Also, the "Recent changes" link just to the left is an important page -- every change on the site gets recorded there, and you can view the history of every page on here if you search long enough.

You'll notice that currently there's a lot of edits to get rid of spam. Tragic.

Anyway, you can edit any page in here, and don't worry about messing things up. It's nice to use that space at the bottom to put a summary describing the edit, and if you're careful, you can hit "show preview" before saving any final edits.

Sub-headings look like this

Lists are made with asterixes:

  • Here's how you format a link to a website (http://www.barbelith.com). Note the single brackets.

What, now?

Italics are made with pairs of single quotes, bold is made with sets of three single quotes.

By putting four tildas in a row: ~~~~ you get a signature with a time/datestamp. Note that "nowiki" tags enable you to type characters that normally would be invisible commands.

You can also do something similar to a "blockquote" by indenting:

Like so.
If you want to have it all in one text block, make sure every new
line starts with a space.

Even blank lines.
If you want blocks kept separate, hit return twice and don't space the blank line. Be aware that text in these blocks doesn't automatically wrap when they reach the right margin, so you'll have to insert your own line breaks.
I think
<pre> tags ''combine'' those two things
, making a text block with no commands inside. I'm not sure, though, since I rarely use them.

Clear enough?
