Sgt. Rock

From Barbelith

In 1959, veteran Robert Kanigher and young artist Joe Kubert created comics' most popular soldier, Sergeant Frank Rock of Easy Company.

Wikipedia profiles Sgt. Rock here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sgt._Rock) and Easy Company here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easy_Company_(comics)). The official DC version is here (http://www.dccomics.com/secret_files/pdfs/sergeant_rock.pdf) (a pdf file).

Vitals

Name: Frank Rock. Referred to as "Rocky" in his first appearance.

Rank: Possibly Senior Platoon Sergeant, First U.S. Infantry Division. (See The Big Red One (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Big_Red_One).) He's referred to as "topkick", Army slang for the senior non-commissioned officer in the company. Also referred to as "the general of sergeants" for refusing numerous promotions.

Serial number: 409966. This is believed to be writer Robert Kanigher's serial number.

Home town: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Relatives: Father, John Rock, died in World War I. Step-father, John Anderson, died in a mine cave-in. Father figure (unnamed) died in a steel-mill accident. His only romantic involvement was with French resistance fighter "Mademoiselle Marie."

Easy Company

Skipper: The commanding officer. I don't know if there was more than one over the course of the comics. Usually a captain.

Bulldozer: Horace Eustace Canfield. Rock's second-in-command.

Ice Cream Soldier: Phil Mason. Hated the heat, always cool in combat.

Wildman: Joseph Wildman Schapiro. A mild-mannered history teacher who goes berserk in the heat of combat.

Jackie Johnson: One of comics' first non-stereotyped black characters, a former heavyweight boxer.

Zack: Uses the bazooka, loses an arm in combat.

Four Eyes: Sharpshooter.

Little Sure Shot: Native American. Wore feathers on his helmet.

Various others rotate in and out of stories. More are listed at the above-linked Wikipedia page; it seems like most can be assumed to have been killed in combat.
