Posting Limits

From Barbelith

(grant) If you're a pathetic messageboard nerd like me (it's easier if you just admit it, really), you'll occasionally try to comment on a message, and get this text:

You have exceeded your posting limit for today.

The post limit applies to the last 24 hours. You are currently allowed to post 25 posts per day and create 10 new topics.

In the last 24 hours you've posted 25 posts and created 1 new topics.

...or something similar.

Why does this happen?

Three reasons:

  • It eases the bandwidth/server space for Tom. Tom is Our Exalted Archon; He pays for all this stuff out of His pocket because He is a Good and Kind Creator. Fewer posts = lower costs.
  • It makes people make their posts count. Fewer posts = less fluffy, trivial stuff and more stuff that actually means something to you and to others. That's the theory, anyway. The more you're thinking, and the more you make others think, the better off the whole community is.
  • It neutralizes some problems with trolls. We've had them in the past. With the limits in place, it's really hard to gunk up the works with hundreds of messages saying "You can't catch my Enlightened Snotstick, greasy |_00z3/)_z!!" or something like that. Damage is minimized - 25 trash posts are vastly easier to clean up than 300 trash posts.
