The Mayor is the overseer of the Mafia game. Basically, ze functions as ringmaster, dungeon keeper, master of ceremonies, etc. It's the Mayor's job to keep the game moving. Duties of the mayor include:

  • Recruiting an appropriate number of players for the game.
  • Selecting an appropriate number of players to play the Mafia, Detective, Villager and optional Doctor roles.
  • Creating an atmosphere for the game - by narrating the circumstances in which the game takes place, the Mayor can opt for places to assume 1920s classic mob roles, medieval witch hunt roles, "Red Scare" McCarthyite roles, or whatever ze desires. (of note - the online version seems to encourage a bit of role-playing tomfoolery, the assumption of various characters, settings or whatnot. -- grant')
  • Determining a schedule for village votes, and harrassing players who haven't voted within the prescribed time.
  • Answering the Detectives' questions, and fulfilling the Mafia's hit requests.
