Harvey and Frank

From Barbelith

iivix:

Something that no-one seems to have noticed yet is the similarity between Donnie Darko and James Stewart's film Harvey (1950) in which Stewart's character Elwood P. Dowd has an imaginary six foot rabbit friend named "Harvey"...

Anyone seen that film? Coincidence or influence?

Utopia:

How can Harvey not be an influence? Actually, I introduced DD to some people by that comparison. Wasn't Jimmy Stewart an alcoholic in that movie, or is that a product of my imagination? If so, do these two films combine to form a genre depicting characters getting fucked up and seeing 6 ft. rabbits?

sleazenation:

I think we are beginning to repeat ourselves here, I'm sure Harvey has already been mentioned. But yes Elwood is portrayed as being a regular drinker. But perhaps more relevant is plot hatched by elwood's sister to have him committed because of his visions...

E. Randy Dupre:

I thought Harvey had been brought up, too, but can't find it in the thread. Whatever, I've seen or heard somewhere (if not here, then it's either in an interview or on the DVD commentary) that Kelly claims never to have seen it and that it is just coincidence.

E. Randy Dupre:

I was thinking about Donnie Darko earlier, and I'm convinced that if it's properly defined as a movie about time travel, then so is It's A Wonderful Life. The difference is that Donnie's shown that the love of his life will suffer if he lives (and, going back to the comparisons game that the DD thread encouraged, Donnie Darko = It's A Wonderful Life = Jimmy Stewart = Harvey = Donnie Darko).
