Drew Barrymore's showbiz career started with her key role as Gerdie in Steven Spielberg's E.T.: The Extraterrestrial. She is a supporting player and executive producer for Donnie Darko.
Several of the scenes in Donnie Darko visually reference Spielberg's movie: a bicycle chase with kids wearing hoodies, men in hazmat suits leaving a normal suburban home, Hallowe'en lanterns on house porches at night, etc.
