'101' threads
From Barbelith
Threads with the label "101" are meant to function as "beginner's guides" to a particular topic. As such, there's supposed to be more latitude to ask questions that could be considered a little dicey or ignorant in other threads on related topics.
For example, if Poster X uses a Switchboard thread titled "Albania's Civil War: Major Shift in Society?" to ask the question, "But they get married to German shepherds in Albania, don't they?" then Poster X is likely to hear from some outraged Albanians and dog lovers (but not in that way), and the thread might well careen wildly off topic. However, the same question in an "Albanian Society 101" thread would probably get a much more patient, "Yes, well, we've all heard the stories about Albanians and their work dogs, but this is one of those cases where all the stories happen to be wrong...." response.
They are, in a (compound, hyphenated) word, "low-snark" threads.
